Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fit a beef roast or whole chicken in there?

Yes you can.  You may also wish to butterfly the chicken.

How many watts does the electric smoker use?

The Australian Muurikka Smoker is 1100W / 240V and has been modified to meet Australian Standard requirements.

Do I need to cook the meat before placing in the smoker?

No. The Muurikka Electric smoker cooks and imparts smokey flavours at the same time.

How does the Electric Smoker Work?

When you first turn the electric smoker on, the heating element will bring the smoker up to a set temperature within minutes (roughly 220 degrees C ).  This process will take around 5 – 10 minutes.  The wood chips will start to char and smokey flavours will impart into your meat, fish, cheese or veggies while cooking them at the same time.

Do I need to preheat my Electric Smoker before use?

There is no need to preheat your smoker.  Just follow the cooking times.  You can however, preheat the smoker 10 minutes before inserting the produce if you wish, just be sure to reduce the cooking time by app 10 minutes.

What if my produce weighs more than 1.5kg?

For each additional 1/2 kilo add an extra 10 minutes to the cooking time.

What if I want a stronger smokey flavour?

Just add more wood chips onto the tray.  Do NOT cook the food longer periods - it won't help.  By adding more wood chips you will produce stronger, smokey flavours.

How about low and slow methods in the smoker?

If you prefer to cook your meats using the low and slow method, simply do just that in your kitchen oven.  For the last 20 - 25 minutes of cooking time, place the meat in the electric smoker and it will impart smokey flavours of your choice.

How do I smoke my meat best in the Muurikka Electric Smoker?

Simply follow our cooking times for meats and refer to the weight of the produce. As a general rule, Muurikka normally recommends placing larger cuts of meat in the smoker first (without the wood chips) for a certain time and then adding the wood chips for the remaining time.  You may also wish to follow the instructions above.

Can I use my smoker indoors?

The smoker is intended for outdoor use and is the perfect addition for your outdoor area.  You can place it next to your BBQ .

Can I use my smoker in my restaurant or cafe?

Most restaurants and cafes use the electric smoker indoors as they have sufficient extraction fans and ventilation inside the premise.  This of course is fine as long as you don’t go setting off any fire alarms.

Do I have to clean my smoker?

Avoid strong cleaners and excess water when cleaning the inside of your Muurikka Smoker.  Just be sure to foil all the trays before use.  After use, you can just simply water the trays down and remove any food which may end up on the dripping tray.

If you wish to thoroughly clean your smoker, please refer to the guide below.

Types of wood or other recommendations for smoking in the Muurikka electric smoker?

Only use suitable fruit and nut woods which can be purchased online or at your local BBQ store.  It doesn’t always need to be wood chips and brown sugar.  Try smoking with brown sugar and tossing in some fresh herbs.  Just be sure to finally add some water so they don’t char too quickly.   You can also add fresh herbs to the wood chips and brown sugar when smoking in the smoker.  Some people love smoking using tea leaves.  You won't know until you try!

On a final note, do not use saw dust as it will char too quickly.

You can also soak your wood chips a few hours beforehand.  If you choose this method, the wood chips will last longer and produce more smoker.

What size wood chips can I use in the smoker?

You can use wood chips which are similar to the ones provided with your smoker or larger.  Do not use wood chips which are smaller.

Can I use the smoker as an oven or grill?

Yes you can.  Don’t add any wood chips in the smoker and you will be able to use it as an oven or grill.  Just remember the Muurikka Electric Smoker works at a set temperature which gets quite hot.

How long should I cook the meat?

The length of the cooking time totally depends on the type of produce you are cooking and the weight.  Simply follow the guide on the back page of your recipe book or refer to our cooking times on our website.

Do you have spare parts for the smokers?

Yes, we have spare heating elements in stock.

How long does it take to impart smokey flavours into the produce?

With the Muurikka Electric Smoker you only need around 20 – 25 minutes of smoking time to impart smokey flavours into meat, fish, veggies or cheese.  Don’t be afraid of experimenting and trying different ways of cooking.

How long is the warranty on the Muurikka Electric Smoker?
